Battery Compliance

Companies that import, manufacture or sell portable batteries or accumulators or products containing portable batteries/accumulators must comply with the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations and the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations

Battery regs

Included are Industrial batteries (such as for handheld terminals and barcode readers used in shops and restaurants in shops); portable batteries (such as AA or AAA batteries used to power a remote control that may accompany appliances such as televisions and DVD players); and automotive batteries (such as under the bonnet of your car).

The aim of the Regulations is to reduce the environmental impacts of batteries and accumulators once they reach the end of life and conserve world resources.

Producers of portable batteries must join a compliance scheme to comply with the Regulations (producers of less than 1 tonne of portable batteries per year must register with the Environment Agency).

Producers of industrial and/or automotive batteries must register with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to comply with the Regulations.
